The Story Behind the
Thyroid Awareness Foundation

On February 1, 2010, Cindy Piazza was at an auto body repair shop where she was dropping her car off to get some work done, when suddenly, with no warning or symptoms, she collapsed to the floor in cardiac arrest. The Shop Manager, Don Carlen, quickly performed CPR on her and saved her life. When the paramedics arrived, they shocked her with the paddles five times and she was rushed to the hospital.

With family and friends by her side around the clock, after seven days in a coma, doctor’s concluded that Cindy had suffered from a Thyroid Storm, the rarest and deadliest form of thyroid attack. Doctors were still concerned about her heart, so before she was allowed to go home, they decided to implant a defibrillator into Cindy’s chest to assure that this type of incident did not happen again.

After many trips to the doctor in the months to follow, Cindy endured three additional surgeries and eventually had her entire thyroid removed.

Today, Cindy is dedicating her time and efforts to educating others about the potential dangers of the thyroid gland. Many people simply do not know what it does and what it is capable of. Cindy is living proof that “What you don’t know could kill you.”

Thyroid Awareness Foundation is a 501c3 Non-Profit Organization.
